Project: Courtyard House, 2019

Location: Whiritoa, Aotearoa

Team: Leonard Hobbins, Tessa Forde

"Sanctuary hiding in plain sight.

From the exterior the building is a monolithic rectangular form clad in suburban vernacular weatherboard. The simple shape contains a private, open living area surrounded by the building.

Black ply clads the central organising courtyard, the timber walkway leads you around the perimeter, connecting the living and private areas of the house.

A large proportion of the courtyard walls are glazed, letting sunlight flood the rooms opening onto the courtyard.

The design is an exercise in efficient planning, providing maximum use from a small built footprint.

Upon arriving at the house, the white cladding slides away revealing the contrasting interior of the courtyard."

Unbuilt but previously consented - design available for purchase.
