Project: The Seven Sorrows of Mary, 2014
Location: Ōtautahi
A speculative proposition for the ruins of the earthquake-damaged Catholic Basilica in Christchurch. The original foundations and platform would remain and an organic concrete form would hover in the place of the old structure. Parts of the ruins would stay in place, allowed to decay. Others would be laid down around the park as if to rest.
The project was presented through the delivery of seven poems titled The Seven Sorrows of Mary. These described the space in both qualitative and quantitative ways, emotional and structural. The idea was that the project speak to ‘The Missing’ in both senses of the word - the physical missing of space and place and the feeling of missing experienced by the people of Christchurch after the devastating earthquake. The entire project was completed by hand.
